South Windermere PlanThe owners of this low slung ranch home located in the South Windermere neighborhood of West Ashley have lived here many years.  They recently decided to make some changes to the landscape and wanted a more functional back yard to enjoy and entertain; as well as a welcoming and easily accessible entry experience.

Construction is underway, with a new stained concrete drive, and  beautiful cast stone patio with a strong linear pattern.  The new patio provides a gentle and generous entry way to the front door that never existed before.  The planting is a modern take on a Charleston garden with parterre like hedges of native viburnum filled with sweetgrass and a groundcover of stokes aster flanking the path.  A row of Sweetbay Magnolias provide a focal point against the side property line.

In the rear yard, beautiful, mature camellias kept their honorary place while a new custom ipe deck, simple stone paving and a grove of Sweetbay Magnolias create an inviting space to enjoy and entertain.  The addition of two simple raised beds will provide space for the owner to grow flowers and vegetables.

REMARK recently completed a remodel project in the established Riverland Terrace Neighborhood on James Island.  This traditional, brick home recently received a modern remodel to the kitchen and living area as well as an addition of a rear screened porch and carport.  The residents have a young family and wanted an update to the landscape in the front of their home as well as a more modern backyard with spaces for the children and adults.  The result is a more traditional renovation of the existing landscape in the front yard and a clean lined, modern space in the backyard.  A beautiful limestone patio was laid to extend the entertaining space from the screened porch into the lawn area.  A new wood fence was constructed for privacy with a play structure in one corner that picks up the same details creating a fun space for the kids.  A new fountain is a visual focal point from the living area inside the home as well as outside.

The project was featured in Charleston Home + Design’s Fall 2011 Magazine as part of their Remodel feature.

Oak Terrace Preserve

Our office is located in the detached studio behind our home in the Oak Terrace Preserve neighborhood of North Charleston.  Shorly after moving in, our home was featured on a YouTube video about the sustainable aspects of the development.  Remark was involved with the redesign of the bioswale planting and details, and several of the pocket parks.
